Wondering where to stay in Nagoya on your next trip to Japan? Find out the best areas and accommodation options below.

Nagoya is one of Japan’s most populous cities, with a population of approximately two million people. Easily accessible from Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo, this city is the perfect base for exploring Japan, especially as this country has excellent transport links.

Although Nagoya is well known for its industrial history, this city has so much more to offer. Boasting iconic attractions such as Legoland, Nagoya Castle, and the SCMaglev and Railway Park, you won’t be short of things to do.

Nagoya also offers a vibrant culture, local culinary delights, and Edo Period architecture, so you’ll want to spend at least a few days here taking in all the sights!

If you’re unsure of where to stay in Nagoya, then I’ve got you covered! This guide covers the best areas to stay in, what there is to do in each area, and hotel recommendations.

1. Sakae (Downtown District)

Best for first-time visitors

Why Stay in Sakae?

Sakae is arguably the best place to stay in Nagoya, especially for first-time visitors to the city. This part of Nagoya is known as the Downtown District and boasts an endless array of attractions, shops, restaurants, and accommodation options.

If you stay here, you’ll be centrally located to everything this city has to offer, with popular attractions such as Oasis 21, the Nagoya TV Tower, and the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art all nearby. The Nagoya City Museum and Shirakawa Park are also within walking distance.

After sightseeing, you can take advantage of the many local restaurants found in Sakae. This area of the city is a foodie paradise, with endless ramen bars and authentic eateries to choose from, giving you plenty of opportunities to sample the local cuisine.

Not to mention, there are some fantastic accommodation options. Many of the hotels in this area are more western, though, so if you’d prefer an authentic stay, it may be best to look elsewhere.

Thanks to Nagoya’s public transport links, you’ll have no issues visiting the city’s other districts either. As such, Sakae is the perfect option for sightseeing!

Downsides: As Sakae is one of the most popular places to stay in Nagoya, hotels can be more expensive. This area is also more touristy, so dining and entertainment prices can reflect that.
