Colourfully designed manhole covers are everywhere in Japan. Some refer to the town or city they’re placed in, while others have references to popular characters, like Pokémon and Gundam. Sailor Moon has joined the club.
The first five manhole covers featuring Usagi and her friends were installed in the Minato Ward in March 2024. A sixth manhole cover was added in March 2026, as well as a seventh in May 2026. As we were staying nearby, we decided to find their exact locations. I created the map below, so you can go check them out yourself.
I’ll add some more information about the manhole covers below, including a story of how I ended up on local TV in Tokyo speaking about the Sailor Moon manhole covers!

Sailor Moon Manhole Covers Locations in Tokyo (Map)
Here are the exact locations of the six Sailor Moon manhole covers in Tokyo:
Five Sailor Guardians (Blue)
You can find this Sailor Moon manhole cover right in front of Minato Library, near Shiba Park. It’s very easy to find, and the first one we stopped by as it’s closest to the hotel we stayed in. The fictitious Shiba Koen Middle School is located here in the series, which is where Sailor Venus goes to school.
Coordinates: 35.65974, 139.75015

Five Sailor Guardians (Green)
The next Sailor Moon manhole cover can be found next to Shiba Water Supply Station Park. It’s close to the Dutch Embassy building too, we found out. From here, you can get some great views of Tokyo Tower, which is often featured in the manga and anime.
Coordinates: 35.66106, 139.74587

Five Sailor Guardians (Red)
The red Sailor Moon manhole cover sits a bit further out and can be found in Roppongi. It features Usagi, Ami, Rei, Makoto and Minako and is located in front of the entrance of Toyo Eiwa Girls’ School Elementary School. In the series, Sailor Mars attends a school called T*A Private Girls School, which is based on this real-life school. The background of this manhole cover is red, just like Sailor Mars’ outfit.
Coordinates: 35.66056, 139.73465

Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask
The manhole cover featuring Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask can be found right outside exit 4 at Azabu Juban station and in front of Oslo Coffee. This also marks the start of Azabu Juban Shopping Street, which is where Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon, spent a lot of time herself. The street can also be seen in the series multiple times.
This is where we ran into the local news reporters, so I forgot to take a photo of the area around. I’ve added a screenshot of Google Maps so you can easily find it – as Google Maps hasn’t updated with a 2024 version of this street, the manhole cover doesn’t show on the screenshot yet (but I promise, it’s there!).
Coordinates: 35.65538, 139.73681

Five Sailor Guardians (Yellow)
The final Sailor Moon manhole cover was the hardest one to find in our search, but we ended up locating it at the entrance of Keio Nakadori. The shopping district is often featured in the series, making it a perfect location for one of the manhole covers. The yellow background represents Sailor Venus (or Sailor V), Sailor Moon’s predecessor.
Coordinates: 35.64725, 139.74696

Ten Sailor Guardians (Purple)
This 6th Sailor Moon manhole cover was installed two years after the first five were placed down, so I haven’t been able to visit it myself yet. However, I’ve added screenshots of Google Maps on where to find it exactly.
On this purple manhole cover, you can see the 10 Sailor Guardians surrounded by cherry blossoms. You can find it just in front of the vending machine, as shown in the screenshot below (Google Maps hasn’t updated yet, so in the screenshot, you just see a plain manhole cover, but I promise you it’s there!).
Coordinates: 35.66557, 139.72893

Ten Sailor Guardians (Rainbow)
The seventh Sailor Moon manhole cover was installed just a couple of months after the sixth, at the end of May 2026. On it, you can find the ten Sailor Guardians on a colourful, rainbow background.
To find it, you go through the North Ticket Gate of JR Takanawa Gateway Station, follow the road until you find stairs leading down. Follow them down and turn right; the manhole cover will be around this area.

About the Sailor Moon Manhole Covers
Hunting down manhole covers has become a fun activity to join when travelling in Japan. There are even free manhole cover cards to collect! When I started my Manhole Cover Club on Facebook, I didn’t expect this many people to join and share pictures of the beautiful covers they’d found.
The PokéLids have been very popular over the years, with over 250 spread across the country. I even travelled to Machida, the hometown of the creator of Pokémon, to see six of the manhole covers. They are so fun to hunt down, and with maps like these, it’s easy to check whether there are any near the places you’re planning to visit.
Sailor Moon, like Pokémon, is one of those franchises many of us grew up with. It may even have been where the love and interest in Japan started. So it’s great seeing that the Sailor Guardians have finally gotten their first manhole covers.
During one of our stays in Tokyo in early 2024, we stayed in the Shiba Park Hotel for a few days. Since the hotel is only a stone’s throw from one of the Sailor Moon manhole covers, I decided to spend one afternoon hunting them down. It was so much fun, and we saw so many lovely views of Tokyo Tower that I otherwise wouldn’t have found.
Turns out, we weren’t the only ones trying to find the manhole covers! We saw a few others stopping and taking photos of them, and even ran into a local television crew doing a story on them.
Since the covers were only just installed, they probably didn’t expect two foreigners looking for them yet and asked to interview us. It was really fun seeing ourselves on the news later that evening in our hotel room (with Japanese voiceovers!).

The Sailor Moon manhole covers were installed in the Azabu Juban area of the Minato Ward in Tokyo. This wasn’t just a random spot. It was chosen as some parts of this area have been featured in the manga and anime, making it the perfect place for the manhole covers.
You can find more information about the Sailor Moon manhole covers on the official website of Tokyo’s Minato Ward.
